MUMBAI: A BEST bus crushed both the legs of a 35-year-old man outside Ghatkopar (W) station on Friday. The victim, Gorakh Londe, faces amputation, say doctors at Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.
One of the relatives of Londe, a labourer from Asalfa village, told TOI, "His ankles have been crushed. The doctors have told us that they may need to operate on his feet.''
This accident comes soon after the Thursday's incident in which a software professional was run over by a BEST bus in Andheri (E).
According to the police, Londe works as a labourer in an antique furniture shop in Ghatkopar (W). The accident occurred around 8:45 pm when he was walking home after work.
Near the turn of CGS Colony, a BEST bus (route no 421) hit him while turning towards the station. Londe fell on the road and the front wheel of the bus crushed his feet, said sub inspector A S Sable of the Ghatkopar police.
Londe's friends rushed him to Rajawadi Hospital. "His condition is better now. We will keep him under observation for at least 12 to 24 hours and see how he reacts to antibiotics and other medicines. We will then decide the course of action,'' said Dr V B Shukla, medical superintendent of Rajawadi Hospital.
The bus driver has been arrested for rash and negligent driving. According to the BEST records, there have been 32 fatal accidents involving the undertakings buses since April this year.
BEST spokesperson A S Tamboli said, "We conduct an inquiry whenever such incident occurs. If a driver is found guilty, strict action is taken against him according to the rules and regulation of BEST. Friday's accident was not a fatal one. The patient is out of danger and is under treatment.''
